On 13th June 1943, Utkal University Bill was passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly by Pandit Godavarish Mishra, the then Minister of Education. In 1950 the territorial jurisdiction of the university was not specified in the year 1950, so territorial jurisdiction was defined as including the whole Odisha State. The university has several departments and has taken charge of several constituent institutions. At the present University of Utkal is working with 27 post-graduate teaching and research departments on campus.
