About Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore

Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (CMC Vellore) an unallied, Christian Minority Educational Institute, It was established and regulated bthe “Christian Medical College Vellore Association” which is a registered society, of around 50 different Christian Churches across India and Christian organizations. The society runs more than 225 hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries throughout many states of the country, primarily in rural areas. CMC Vellore takes thousands of students across India in its various medical courses every year.

The objective of establishing a national level Educational Institute and the hospital was to spread the spirit of Crist and provide a higher grade of education to the individuals and creating individuals who can serve the humanity through Healthcare. Established in the year Founded in 1900 by an American missionary, Dr. Ida S. Scudder, CMC Vellore is dedicatedly providing best of medical facilities to thousands of patients who visit every day. The Institute because of its vivid education curriculum and trained doctors and scholars have achieved many milestones since its establishment. Some of them are:

  • Establishing first College of Nursing in India-1946
  • First reconstructive surgery for leprosy in the world - 1948
  • Performing the first successful open heart surgery in India - 1961
  • Performing the first kidney transplant in India - 1971
  • Performing first bone marrow transplantation - 1986
  •  And first successful ABO-incompatible kidney transplant in India – 2009

Currently, CMC, Vellore, offers Medical graduation, post-graduation (both diploma and degree), and other higher specialty courses, a part of this, they also offer graduate and postgraduate courses in Nursing, other degree and diploma Allied Health Science. Bioengineering courses are also offered at the Institute.

Medical Education:  In 1942, the medical school started by Dr. Scudder was raised to the status of a college and 25 students were admitted to the MBBS course, which was the only course available at that time. In 1988, CMC got affiliated to ‘Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University', earlier it was affiliated to the University of Madras. In the year 2001, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission awarded a five-star rating to the institution. With the Increase in demand for world-class Healthcare in the nation, CMC-Vellore emerges as the solution and started many programs to meet the needs of medical education. At present the Institute offers:

  • Postgraduate diploma courses in 11 specialties
  •  Postgraduate degree courses in 24 specialties
  • 17 higher specialty courses
  •  In addition, Masters Degree courses are offered in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Medical Physics, Public Health, Bioengineering and Clinical Engineering.
  •  M.Phil in Hospital and Health Systems Management.

Nursing Education: With the establishment of first nursing college in India by CMC Vellore, the nation was taken into storm, with time various courses added in order to meet the needs of professional individual in the field and currently College of Nursing admits 100 students in both Diploma Nursing (affiliated to the Board of Nursing Education of the Nurses League of the Christian Medical Association of India)  and B.Sc. Nursing programmes (affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai).

Allied Health Sciences: As the skilled professionals of CMC Vellore were readily absorbed by the society, Institute felt the need of more trained Individuals in the field of Allied Health Science, with the vision of that degree and diploma courses in Allied Health Sciences, were introduced. In 1903 the very 1st Programme in this category was introduced as a compounder training programme, which was upgraded as the Diploma in Pharmacy. At present, the institution offers about 19 degree and 10 diploma courses, 11 Post Graduate Diploma courses and 2 fellowship courses in the Allied Health Sciences.

Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore Admission

For getting admission for UG courses, the student should have passed XII examination with a minimum of 50% marks with subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology.

For getting admission for  PG courses, the student should hold an MBBS degree with an internship experience. NEET PG examination is also required for the admissions.

Educational Initiatives by CMC for Social Affairs

Christian Medical College, commonly known as CMC, is an educational institute in Chennai whose aim is to impart holistic education in order to make ethical leaders to reach out to as many people in the rural areas as possible. It has been accredited by UGC and NAAC for its contribution in helping those in need.
CMC Courses include 19 Postgraduate programs, 22 Higher Specialty programs at DM and Ch levels, 11 PG Diploma Programs, 5 M.SC. programs, and 43 Post-doctoral fellowship programs along with 40 Allied Health Sciences Programs. 
CMC has initiated a model, Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) which has been serving needy and economically weak people since 1977 now. RUHSA has introduced short and long-term training programs along with educational workshops for health care professionals and mid-level health care providers who would retain help for the physicians while addressing the health concerns of the rural people.


Some of the Training programs devised by CMC are:
3 Years Bachelor's Degree Training for Medical Sociologists 
The Medical Sociologists are made adept with proper training for assessing the qualitative experience of the patients. These sociologists work on the circumference of public health, social work and demography to decode methods at the intersection of social and clinical services. Thereby, the skilled graduates are qualified to work in hospitals, nursing homes, or social service agencies, who provide help to those with severe medical problems and disabilities. 
RUHSA Certificate Course for Small Health Care Organizations
Around 100 students were trained under a 4-month certificate course in Integrated Rural Development from 1981-1991 and almost 647 were given training in Community Organization and Development from 1982-1997. These courses proved to be extremely beneficial for the NGOs to work efficiently even with limited resources in hand. 
Orientation to Integrated Health and Development Model for Rural Health Care
More than 9,000 B.Sc. Nursing students at CMC were provided with a week's intensive training course to make them adapt themselves to rural health needs and with the components of a model rural health care program. Moreover, a number of international students from the Global Health Stream have spent time in RUHSA in the course of understanding the Health and Development Model, as promoted by RUHSA, for development of Rural Health Care in India and other low resource settings.
Underprivileged Youth Training for Employment through Community College Courses
Deriving its impetus from the PM's “Skill Indian” campaign, RUHSA developed an inclusive institution to provide employment-oriented education to the economically and socially disadvantaged groups. This vocational Training Centre provides courses in Automobile Four-Wheeler Mechanism, Automobile Two-Wheeler Mechanism, Electric Wiring and Motor Rewinding Mechanism, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanism, and a Beautician's course. 


Public Health Champion Award

The Christian Medical College Vellore was given the Public Health Champion Award by the WHO (World Health Organization) in 2015.

In 2015 Christian Medical College won the coveted and prestigious D. L. Shah Quality Award - Gold for its Clinical Audit Programme.

SKOCH Awards - Platinum Award

CMC won Platinum awards in every category of the prestigious SKOCH awards in 2014.
