The Harcourt Butler Technical University also known as HBTU, is one of the leading Residential University which focuses on Research, Development and Incubation in the field of Engineering, Technology, Basic & Applied Sciences, Humanities, Social Science, & Management Architecture. It was established in the year 1921 at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and was named after Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, governor of United Provinces during British India. It is known to be one of the oldest engineering institutes of the country and offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral Programmes in engineering and computer applications. On September 1, 2016, it was granted the status of University under the HBTU Act, 2016 passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The Institute has also received aids from the World Bank for various developmental projects and holds the ISO 9001:2000 certification.
HBTU Campus is divided into two parts i.e. the east campus and the west campus. The East Campus is also known as the academic block and comprises of administrative offices and various departments, central library, auditorium, workshop, cafeterias, computer centre, guest house, medical centre, electronics department, bank, four girls' hostel, two boys' hostel and sports ground. The West Campus comprises of three boys' hostel, DBRA hotels, new hostels, gymnasium, community centre, residential quarters, bank and playgrounds.
Numerous national and international conglomerates participate in placement processes of HBTU and Adobe, Accenture, Tata Power, Larsen & Tourbo, Infosys and IBM are among the top recruiters. The institute grants scholarships funded by the government of Uttar Pradesh, based on the financial status of the students.

Admissions for B.Tech 2018 are based on JEE Main rankings. HBTU Kanpur will conduct separate counselling for B.Tech admissions.
