The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is an engineering and technology school in Chennai (formerly Madras) in southern India. Recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India, it is regarded as one of the finest engineering institutions in India. Founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the German Government, IIT Madras is third among currently sixteen Indian Institutes of Technology (including 6 new IITs started in 2008 and 2 more in 2009) established by the Government of India through an Act of Parliament, to provide education and research facilities in engineering and technology.

Spread across 2.5 sq. km (630 acres) IIT Madras campus which was formerly a part of the Guindy National Park, The campus has a protected forest being home to many wildlife animals such as chital, black buck etc. The institute has nearly 550 faculties, 8,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff, administered by IIT council an apex body formed to keep an eye into the working of all the IITs present in the country.

There are various undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by IIT Madras such as B.Tech, M.Tech. IIT Madras Scholarship

Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: This scholarship is given to those students whose parents income is less than 4,50,000 per annum. The benefit of this scholarship is an exemption of 67% tuition fee.

Institute National Prize: This scholarship is given to the students on the basis of JEE rank and whose parents income is less than 4,50,000 per annum. The benefit of this scholarship is a one-time grant of Rs. 1000.

Indian Women's Association at Bonn Scholarship: This scholarship is given to the students on the basis of JEE rank and whose parents income is less than 5 lakhs per annum. One B.Tech student will be given Rs. 1250 per month for 12 months only.

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is popularly known as IIT Madras. It was established in 1959. IIT Madras offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as B.Tech, M.Tech. M.Sc, M.A, and Ph.D.

The application procedure for undergraduate courses:
  • Visit the JEE Main official website.
  • At home page click on the apply link.
  • Register yourself with a valid mobile number and e-mail address.
  • Read all the information carefully on information bulletin.
  • click on ``Proceed'' tab.
  • Fill all the necessary details.
  • Scanned copies of the following documents need to be uploaded: signature, thumb impression, and photograph.
  • The application fee can be paid through Credit/Debit Cards or e-challan. The application fee is INR 1000 and INR 500 for Girls.

IIT Madras, ONGC sign MoU to develop Database Management Systems for Offshore Platforms

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has collaborated with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to enhance the operational life cycle of existing platforms and minimize operation cost by optimum use of offshore survey requirements.

According to the statement issued by the institute, “The IIT Madras is going to develop a database management system for all the 280-plus platforms of the ONGC and develop software for Structural Integrity Management System (SIMS) as well.”

The statement also notified that considerable efforts had been made regarding the structural stability and strength of the platforms for last 10-15 years. The project is led by Prof. S Nallayarasu from IIT Delhi. Prof. S Nallayarasu has an experience of over 25 years in the oil and gas industry, research and teaching.

Prof. Ravindra Gettu, Dean (Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research) IIT Madras said, “This is an important collaboration that has the potential to bring about significant results. We are sure this will be the first of many such tie-ups between IIT Madras and ONGC.”

Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Executive Director, Head of Institute of Engineering and Ocean Technology, ONGC said, “This kind of collaboration will go a long way in benefitting the country. This is part of a concerted effort to further industry-academic collaboration and a good start has been made between IIT Madras and ONGC.”

Prof. Ravindra Gettu and Mr. Dinesh Kumar signed the agreement for the Collaborative Research and Development project named ‘Development of Structural Integrity Management System (SIMS) for Offshore Platforms of ONGC'.
