Started with the vision "To create, disseminate and translate knowledge in science, engineering and allied disciplines that will best serve the society." The institute is at 293 positions in the rankings of World University Rankings 2018.  The college offers a wide range of courses from undergraduate to Ph.D.  and at present 3938 and 2540 students are enrolled under undergraduate and postgraduate courses respectively. The campus is spread in 1055 Acres with 108 buildings dedicated to academic departments, student hostels, auditoriums and other facilities.

The academic programmes at IIT Kanpur are designed to fulfill its objective to produce potential, skillful and imaginative engineers, future scientists and designers by providing the highest level of technical education to the students and shaping career and personality of each and every individual.

Understanding the needs of the modern world, IIT Kanpur focuses on academic programmes which are highly evolved and offer a range of flexibility to its students. It also allows students to change their stream if they wish to, after the first year. The students are evaluated and 35% of total credit comes from the compulsory courses in any stream, out of which 12% of the credit is from the compulsory course of humanities to develop a strong understanding as well as the connection of students with the society. Not just programmes but there is a range of flexibility in the degree awarded from the Institute, below is some of the specially designed degree courses which students can opt for:

  • 5 year Dual Degree programme (B Tech + M Tech). A student can even move from a science (Bachelors of Science) to an engineering stream of (M Tech).
  • Dual Major Programme (Two B.Tech degree), if a student wishes to opt for two B.Tech degrees in different streams he can choose Dual Major Programme and get two B Tech degrees in selected streams.
  • A student can also choose an MS Program by research, the goal of such a programme is to fill the gap between educational research and industrial collaboration.
