The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, widely referred to as NIT Trichy, commenced its establishment in the academic year of 1964. The institute was previously known as Regional Engineering College and in the year 2003 it was renamed as National Institute of Technology. The institute is situated on the banks of river Cauvery in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. because of the affluent experience, the institute has been granted the status of ‘Deemed University'.  The institute has also been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Government of India.

The establishment of NIT Trichy was undertaken jointly by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. The main aim of establishing the institute was to provide quality education though undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs.

  • Admission to M. Tech and M. Arch requires qualifying Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination.
  • Candidates seeking admission to MCA program must hold a valid score in NIMCET examination.

Admission to MBA requires a valid score in Common Aptitude Test (CAT). The final selection is based on the cut off marks in CAT examination.

  • Training and Placement

The Training and Placement cell of the institute believes in supporting Institute-Industry interaction. The cell organizes and coordinates frequent industrial visits, training and projects of industrial relevance. The cell conducts various campus placement programs and thus, it attains its adherence of a job to every student.

  • Central Library

The central library of the institute has been equipped with several facilities. These facilities include Bulletin Board Service, Current Awareness Service, Audio Visual Service, CD-ROM Search Service, Membership to External Agencies and Individuals, etc. This Digital Knowledge Center has been equipped with 35 Ubuntu computer systems with a proper LAN connection.

  • Central Workshop

The central workshop helps students with fabrication services for their respective projects. There are various segments to the central workshop such as fitting and carpentry section, the machine shop, and the welding and foundry section. These machines complete the basic fabrication requirements.

  • Physical Education/Sports Center

The sports center of NIT Trichy was built in the year 1999. It is a multi-disciplinary sports complex equipped with several facilities. The main aim of establishing the sports center was to create fully developed personalities of students. There is an indoor system along with a fitness center which ensures good health of its students.

Minimum Educational Qualification

For Undergraduate Programs

  • For admission to B. Tech, the candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology securing at least 75% (65% for RC) marks in aggregate.
  • For admission to B. Arch, the candidates must have passed 10+2 with Mathematics securing at least 75% marks in aggregate.

For Postgraduate Programs

  • For admission to M. Tech, the candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in the relevant field securing at least 60% marks in aggregate from a recognized university.
  • Candidates with a BE/B. Tech degree with at least 60% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply for admission to M. Tech.
  • For admission to M. Arch, the candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline securing at least 60% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates with a B. Arch degree are also eligible to apply for admission to M. Arch.
  • Candidates seeking admission to MBA must possess a bachelor's degree in the relevant with at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized university.

Admission Procedure for Different Courses at NIT Trichy

Admission to B. Tech and B. Arch programs

Candidates seeking admission to B. Tech and B. Arch must appear in and qualify Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main.

  • JEE Main is a national level entrance examination, qualifying which ensures admission to Engineering and Technology programs.
  • Candidates with a valid score in JEE Main must sit through the counseling conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Admission to the postgraduate programs

  • Admission to M. Tech and M. Arch is done based either on CCMT or GATE examination.
  • CCMT stand for Centralized Counseling for M. Tech/M. Arch. In order to get admission to any of the NITs, the candidates must sit through the counseling process conducted.
  • Candidates with a valid score in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are also eligible to apply for admission to M. Tech or M. Arch programs.
  • Admission to M. Sc requires qualifying of an entrance examination conducted by NIT Trichy along with a valid score in the last qualifying examination.
  • For admission to MBA, candidates are shortlisted based on their performance in the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) conducted at the national level for Management programs.
  • Candidates who hold a valid score in CAT examination are required to sit through the group discussion and personal interview rounds conducted by the institute.
  • For admission to MCA, the candidates are shortlisted based on their performance in NIMCET.

The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli also referred to as NIT Trichy is one of the excellent institutions across the country which are known for their devotion to providing standard and quality education along with technical proficiency for the young generations currently present and are yet to come. The annual techno-managerial fest of NIT Trichy, Pragyan, is one of the biggest technical festivals in the country and showcases the talent of students from various colleges across the nation. Pragyan is acclaimed for its distinctive experiences and opportunities that it offers for technology admirers and enthusiasts. Pragyan holds ISO 20121:2012 certification for Sustainable Event Management, becoming the first student-run organization in the world and also the third overall, next only to the 2012 London Olympics and Manchester United FC. Pragyan has also been certified with the ISO 9001:2015 certification for Quality Management Systems, making it one of the most desirable and sought-after technical fests across the country.

This year's edition of Pragyan is happening from March 12-15 at NIT Tiruchirappalli, with 'Pixel' as the theme for this year. The fest hosts a variety of Events, Workshops, Exhibitions, a Hackathon, Guest Lectures, Infotainment shows and more. Pragyan also conducts its flagship debate showcase, ‘Crossfire', featuring eminent personalities from in and around the country. There are 8 broad clusters among which nearly 30 events have been grouped and each cluster deals with different realms of Science and Technology. 

Events contain clusters like 'Bytehoc', whichcaptures the interests of all the computer geeks and coders and encourages both online and offline participants to try their hand. 'Manigma' offers various management related events. It continues to proceed through multiple rounds and encircles the several skills needed to be transformed into an ideal manager.'Phronesis' tests the logical and analytical skills of students who participate and engages them in a tumult of clues and puzzles. The cluster 'Concreate' is considered a civil engineer's bliss and it also conducts events that challenge their inventiveness and problem-solving skills. For those who want to convert their ideas into products, Pragyan brings them 'Conception', which primarily consists of racing and design-based events.

One of these clusters is 'Roborex' which being is awaited eagerly and comprises of fighting remote-controlled robots, boats, and quadcopters. 'Pandora's Box' brings an assortment of puzzles, mazes and Rubik's cube challenges making it an entertaining affair. The last event cluster that Pragyan has in-store is 'Trivia' - the quiz cluster - an eye-catcher for the quiz lovers out there. One of the major things that differentiate Pragyan from the other technical fests conducted across various educational institutions of its kind is Pragyan encourages and motivates online participation as much as it does offline one. Pragyan 2019 edition saw students and professionals/officials from over more than 60 countries that participated in various events conducted.

If compared to various events, Pragyan 2020 involves an amazing assembling of Workshops where students get to learn about cutting edge technologies. The topics which are given to students vary from process simulation using Aspen Hysis and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt used for process enhancement to Stock Market along with Financial Planning and a lot more than that.

Pragyan also hosts a lot of outreach events like 'Square One' and 'Pragyan Hackathon 2020'. This is how Pragyan shows off a glimpse of how a grand fest is conducted to the neighboring cities and other institutes. “Sangam” and “Ingenium” are two Inter and Intra collegiate hackathons which are also conducted by the institute as a part of the performance. Students work assiduously to represent their ideas and projects for which it operates as a platform.

The social responsibility wing of Pragyan has been granted with several initiatives both inside and outside the campus. Pragyan observed Campus Development Week, which provided free workshops and various awareness programs to boost the morale of students. Pragyan also launched programs like 'Dhisai' and 'Catalyst'. The main objective of Dhisai is to educate school children about Joint Entrance Examination and the bright future that students may live in if they qualify the examination. Catalyst is an initiative to impart basic science, math and English to school children. With such initiatives taken in order to bring admirable changes, Pragyan has been personified as an example like none other.

Pragyan is also intended to bring down esteemed and renowned personalities for its Guest Lecture series. Famous and distinguished personalities like Ajay Bhatt, Bhargavi Nuvvula, and Dr. Casy Handmer have adorned the previous editions of Pragyan and they also left the audience spellbound by their story telling techniques and achievements. These Infotainment shows provided audience with a fitting end for each day, incorporating art and technology in unparalleled ways, and restoring inquisitiveness amongst them. Pragyan 2020 has been termed as the most foreseen technical fests across the country which attracts students and corporates.
