About University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi

The University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi known as UCMS Delhi was established in the year 1971 by the efforts of the Delhi Health Ministry. The institution was set up to provide medical education to the qualified students as the two existing medical colleges of Delhi i.e. MAMC and LHMC were unable to provide an opportunity to the aspiring masses. During its inception in the year 1971, the college started in the makeshift Department of Chemistry at North Campus, Delhi University. Later, the University college of medical sciences was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi, however, in the year 1986, it was shifted to its present location at Dilshad Garden and is currently associated to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

Highlights of UCMS Delhi:

• It offers medical and paramedical courses and imparts health care facility to East Delhi community.
• The college works as the network center for the National Brain Research Centre.
• The institute serves as a nodal center for AIDS and Safdarjung Hospital.
• The institute is one of the three public trauma centers across the state.
• It is the first medical college which initiated Medical Humanities Group.
• The college enrolls 150 students in MBBS programme every year and nearly 70 students in Post Graduate medical programmes i.e. MS and MD.
• It forms the triangle of medical Institutes that are affiliated to the University of Delhi along with Maulana Azad Medical College and Lady Hardinge Medical College.

UCMS Delhi offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Research Programmes in the field of medical science and has 21 academic departments individually for Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, Community Medicine, Dentistry, Dermatology, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology and Gynaecology, Opthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery.

• Library: The institute comprises of a central library and 17 departmental libraries. Apart from membership, the library also offers other services such as borrowing, reference, referral, photocopying, and internet facility. The University College of Medical Sciences offers various Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in the field of Medical and Para Medical. It also offers research programmes to the qualifying students. The research programmes at UCMS can broadly be divided into three categories i.e. Funded Projects, Publications, and Intra-Mural Projects. Admissions in Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses are provided on the basis of NEET-UG and NEET-PG respectively.

Students Life at UCMS:

The institute has various clubs such as sports club, cultural club, literature club etc. and the candidate can opt for membership depending upon their personal interests. UCMS organizes 3 festivals every year namely Medicomasti, Ripple and Avalanche. Following are the details of the festivals:

• Medicomasti: It is the youth festival organized by the Heart Care Foundation of India and MTNL.
• Ripple: Its an annual cultural, literary and sports fest which is organized in the second week of March.
• Avalanche: It is organized in the month of September and is known to be the autumn cultural, literary and sports festival of UCMS.
